A Straight Line
I left my home- a tender fool
I left my girl without a clue
The hope of man, the surest sign
Was just a straight line.
And when the train stopped in a town
We’d take a break and shake it down
What is the chance that any man
moves in a straight line?
Cause if the cars jump off the track
you’ll never get your money back
The longest line apart from time
Is just a train track
And if the lamp shines on the ground
Back to my door I’m homeward bound
To forge ahead, or turn around-
What is a straight line?
Cause when a man gives up inside
it’s hard to say just when he dies.
He’ll say he did- but he never tried
to walk a straight line
